One of eleven surviving pieces, including bed hangings and chair slipcovers, this curtain may have once graced an eighteenth-century Philadelphia home. A room decorated completely en suite in fashionable chinoiserie-patterned textiles such as this one would have communicated the owner’s sophistication and good taste. The textile’s design is attributed to John Munns, an English calico printer who was recognized for the high quality of his work. The crispness and the fine detailing of the copperplate-printed pattern demonstrate his artistic ability.
